Employers of all sizes can receive an award from the US Department of Labor (DOL) for their efforts to recruit, employ, and retain United States veterans. It’s good to employ US veterans.

Your business should employ US veterans. Members of the United States military develop leadership, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills that make them highly valuable to employers. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award is the only federal level award that recognizes employers of all sizes who recruit, hire, and retain US veterans in high quality, family-sustaining careers. For employers, the HIRE Vets Medallion Award is more than just lip service. The award signals to potential job candidates, customers, and your community that you are a veteran-friendly business with resources to back it up. For veterans transitioning from active duty, the award means more easily finding secure employment and geographical stability with an organization that values how their military experience relates to their particular civilian job.

The Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act of 2017 (HIRE Vets Act) encourages employers to invest in recruiting, hiring, and retaining US veterans. In addition to giving back to the military veteran community, The Department of Labor highlights the benefits of hiring veterans. US veterans are highly adept in soft skills like customer service, teamwork, and leadership. They are multi-disciplinary and have a history of successful cross-training in various situations. Veterans are team players loyal to their organization. Once a veteran finds their niche inside an organization, they are more likely to be promoted and become leaders. Researchers have also found that veterans can be easier to manage than their civilian counterparts.

The HIRE Vets Medallion Award is NOT a competitive award. It’s based solely on your organization’s ability to meet the standards and criteria of recruiting, hiring, and retaining US veterans in your workforce. Award criteria vary depending on the size of your business. Organizations with 1-50 employees are on the “small employer” tier, organizations with 51-499 employees are on the “medium employer” tier, and companies with 500+ employees are on the “large employer” tier.

The Medallion is awarded in one of two levels, gold and platinum. Award recipients are listed in an online database for easy access by veterans looking for gainful employment. Recipients also receive a certificate and digital images of the medallion for marketing and promotional use through the year of their award.

With over 11 million veterans in the workforce and 175,000 service members discharged from active service each year, US military veterans are valuable team members to any organization.  The HIRE Vets Medallion Award program prioritizes the needs of returning veterans in the labor market and is an important reminder to employers that these individuals have valuable transferable skills that can thrive with intentional training and a solid support structure. In a time when the unemployment rate for veterans is well above the national average, it is more important than ever to make sure your organization’s support structures find the veterans who can benefit the most from them.
