Enhancing Public Health and Safety with Smart City Technology

At Miller’s Landing, a new mixed-use development in Castle Rock, CO,  we’re actively looking at the role smart city technology can play to enhance public health, safety and security.

We have engaged Layer 10 Consulting to assist with this effort, in part due to their unique smart city design methodology that leads with enhancing the user experience. By following this design method, we are creating an opt-in, connected engagement infrastructure that will enrich the experience people have at Miller’s Landing without detracting from its aesthetic.

This design methodology, called SmartTown, focuses on user needs to scale smart city technology to smaller mixed-use developments. With SmartTown, we’re creating a robust, purpose-built smart city technology infrastructure to support this exciting new mixed-used development.

The digital infrastructure at Miller’s Landing will provide tangible benefits to our corporate tenants, their employees, residents and visitors. We’re exploring how smart city technology solutions can help improve mobility, sustainability, community and public health and safety at Miller’s Landing.

SmartTown Enhances Public Safety

Smart city technology plays an important role in public health, safety and security around the world. These smart solutions include intelligent video surveillance systems that detect acts of vandalism and violence, smart traffic lights that adapt to changing traffic patterns and environmental monitoring systems that alert residents of unsafe conditions.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the role technology can play in public health initiatives. Many businesses and communities are already using technology to monitor community spaces and large public gatherings to help identify individuals who may be symptomatic.

A Digitally Interconnected Community

Miller’s Landing will include a digital interconnectivity infrastructure that will be built into the development from day one. The infrastructure’s foundation will be a multi-carrier, robust and redundant converged network that will offer tenants and visitors a fully-connected experience that leverages smart city and smart building technology, scaled to the needs of Miller’s Landing. Its design will allow Miller’s Landing to incorporate tomorrow’s smart city technology as it becomes available.

Safety and security technology options under consideration at Miller’s Landing include:

  • Intelligent video and audio monitoring to enhance threat detection and prevention.
  • Emergency lighting and public address systems that can assist in emergency responses.
  • Thermal devices that can detect fires and unsafe conditions.
  • Technology to improve public safety and detect acts of violence.
  • Telehealth options to increase digital access to medical services.

We’re taking a considered approach to ensure we strike the balance between providing for public health and safety and maintaining personal privacy and freedom. The goal is to complement and enhance the way people use Miller’s Landing and to provide for a sense of safety and security.

To this end, we’re considering designing a variety of safety levels. Some will be campus wide and provide large-scale community monitoring. These include tornado and natural disaster warning systems, emergency lighting and traffic monitoring. Others will be designed for use in specific locations or custom designed to meet the needs of individual tenants.

Using SmartTown to Enhance User Experiences

Unlike other design approaches, the Layer 10 design methodology employs a people-centered approach. This approach ensures that a design meets user needs before we select or install any technology, including our public health and safety technology solutions.

We are not deploying technology for technology’s sake. For every deployed system, there must be a clear connection to an elevated user experience. We want to ensure whatever technology we use truly meets the needs and enhances the experience of tenants and visitors to Miller’s Landing.
