Miller’s Landing Helping to Solve Mobility Challenges

At Miller’s Landing in Castle Rock, CO, we’re using smart city technology to help solve the mobility problems many of us face daily, including quickly and efficiently finding parking and using parking resources wisely and efficiently.

As part of our plans, we’re considering including charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) at Miller’s Landing.

All indicators point to the growth of the EV market. Whether they will one day completely replace the internal combustion engine remains to be seen. Experts, however, expect EVs will be a growing force in the automobile industry.

International investment bank USB sees a steady growth in the percentage of EVs on the road. They forecast that electric vehicles will have 20 percent of the global market share in 2025, which will grow to 50 percent of the vehicle market in 2030.

In their Electric Vehicle Revolution report, USB states, “By 2040, we dare to say, 100% EV could already be a reality. Owning an ICE (internal combustion engine) car will become a true luxury. Carmakers will stop investing in this technology, and “laggard” emerging markets with low car penetration will just leapfrog the ICE technology, like they did with phone landlines, in our view.”

This growth in EVs may depend on the availability of charging stations. Vox recently outlined the lack of available public charging options in their article The fastest way to get more people to buy electric vehicles

The article states there are currently 42,490 public charging stations for EVs in the U.S. The number includes Level 2 chargers that take about an hour to provide a charge for 10 to 20 miles of range, and DC Fast chargers that provide a range of 60 to 80 miles with a 20 minute charge. By contrast, there are approximately 115,000 gas stations in the U.S. Nearly all have multiple fueling stations.

Considering the amount of EVs that are projected to be on the road in future, and the amount of time it takes to charge a vehicle, the number of charging stations is far short of what is needed.

While we can’t do much about what happens nationally with EV charging stations, Miller’s Landing is exploring the possibility of installing EV charging stations at our mixed-use development. We’re currently developing a mobility plan that leverages smart city technology to improve how people navigate Miller’s Landing and the surrounding community.

We’re using our proprietary SmartTown design methodology to create an efficient, user-friendly mobility system. Smart city components currently under consideration include guided intelligent parking solutions, wayfinding/navigation solutions, providing user-friendly transportation options and installing EV charging stations.

We’ll keep you posted as your plans are finalized. Our goal is to provide residents, tenant employees and visitors with the transportation resources they need to make visiting Miller’s Landing efficient, enjoyable and stress free, and that may include having a place to charge your electric vehicle.
