Analyzing Crime Statistics
The MoneyGeek report, Hometown Safety: Calculating the Cost of Crime in America’s Small Cities and Towns, analyzed crime statistics to quantify the cost of crime in small cities across the nation. The report sought to determine whether small cities are safer than big cities, at least in the terms of crime rates. It’s an important question, as more people look to move out of large cities and into smaller communities as a result of recent unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the report, MoneyGeek analyzed data from towns and cities ranging in size from 30,000 to 100,000 residents.
While residents of smaller cities generally do enjoy lower crime rates, a city’s smaller size doesn’t always corollate to a safer community, as some small cities have crime rates that rival even the most dangerous large cities in America.
The Cost of Crime
MoneyGeek analyzed data for crimes such as murder, rape, aggravated assault, burglaries and car theft using crime statistics from the FBI. They also used research from the University of Colorado Denver and the University of Miami to determine their final listings.
The cost of crime per capita in the safest small city on the list, Franklin, MA, was just $12. In Gary, IN, named the least-safe small city, the cost of crime per capita came in at $8,786, close to the rate of $9,334 in St. Louis, ranked the most dangerous large city in the U.S.
The report listed the cost of crime in Castle Rock at $162, which ranks as the safest small city in Colorado and places it in the top tier of safest communities in the country. Other nearby Colorado communities with similar populations and low crime rates include Parker, Centennial and Broomfield, CO.
