Millennials and Boomers Fuel New Trends In Mixed Use Development

There is a generational shift and collaboration underway in the world of multi-use land development.

The movement is rich with hot topics like: hip urban centers, lifestyle balance, and community experiences that balance work, fun, and adventure.

Demographics have fueled the change as Boomers downsize and Millennials look for settings that blend community, passion and ambition inside a landscape that’s big city, yet open and full of outdoor adventures.

Forward-looking developers, start-up companies, and higher end-employees despise rush hour traffic and a 9 to 5 existence that no longer applies. There is an entire generation of adults who came of age in a world where nearly everything is a click away.

These potential clients, retailers, homeowners, and work creators have cast off the old model. These pioneering go-getters, retail customers, and passion seekers demand a lifestyle setting that presents everything from good jobs to entertainment centers encompassed within a walkable and bikeable community. 

Though Millennials are the primary force behind the trend, research shows that retiring Boomers want real estate offerings and multi-use developments that stress easy, expediency and workability.

Environmental responsibility is also a key component for future job creators and employees. The need to experience a full life that combines career and community has driven the need for modern, mixed-use developments like Miller’s Landing in Castle Rock, CO.

The 65-acre mixed-use development envisions an urban and rural eutopia that presents entertainment options, open land, office space, retail offerings and walking access to 300-acre park.

The Miller’s Landing concept follows all the current trends that are taking place in Detroit, Columbus and across other regions of the nation.

The Miller’s Landing development, which highlights the location and outdoor attractions around Castle Rock and Colorado’s Front Range, adheres to a 2017 analysis from the National Association of Realtors®, which polled adults from across the U.S. about what they are looking for in a community. The survey found that 62 percent of Millennials and 55 percent of the silent generation prefer walkable communities and short commutes

The report found that women, particularly young women, prioritize walkability and public transit more than older or younger men. Fifty-four percent of young women said that sidewalks and places to take walks is a very important factor in deciding where to live, and 39 percent said the same about having public transit nearby. However, when it comes to a short commute to work, youth was a greater indicator of preference than gender; 49 percent of young women and 48 percent of young men said being within a short commute to work was a very important factor in deciding where to live.

The data does not lie. The future of multi-use development is driven by visionaries who engage in life, follow passions and embrace a lifestyle rich in promise and possibilities.
