Community Events Return to Castle Rock
For many years, Castle Rock, CO, was known for its year-round schedule of cultural events, an itinerary that ranked the town as one of the best places to live in the nation. After being placed on hiatus most of last year, Castle Rock is coming back to life as COVID restrictions are eased.
A number of major events have already been announced, and more are likely on the way. Here’s a quick look at this summer’s events calendar:
Bicyclists Hit the Road
Earlier this month, the town hosted the Elephant Rock Bicycle Ride and Cycling Expo. An annual event that dates back more than 30 years, the ride brings in thousands of bicyclists who participate in a variety of road courses, a combination gravel/road route or an 8-mile ride family ride.
The ride is named after a rock feature south of town that resembles an elephant, hence the name Elephant Rock. It’s one of the most popular bike events in Colorado every year.
Colorado Wines Take Center Stage
Colorado wines take front and center stage at the Castle Rock Winefest in July. The event features some of the state’s finest wines. It draws wine aficionados who enjoy great wine, food trucks, music and a beer garden featuring local craft beers.
There’s Music in the Air
After missing a year, the Summer Concert Series returns with a number of big name acts. This year’s series will feature The Beach Boys, 38 Special, Parmalee, the Castle Rock Summer Jam and Super Diamond with the Denver Pops.
The concerts are held at the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park. The location has built a reputation as one of the finest places to see live music in Colorado, and has hosted dozens of Grammy-nominated, world-famous artists over the years.
Other music events include the family friendly First Fridays music series held the first Friday of each month from July through September. The events are held at Festival Park in downtown and include live music, food trucks, cocktails and kid activities. The event starts with a 5K run.
Castle Rock celebrates its rich agricultural and ranching heritage with the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo in July. The fair features two entertainment stages, three PRCA rodeos, Xtreme Bulls, a carnival, mutton bustin’ and a stick horse rodeo for the kids along with the traditional pancake breakfast and exhibits from 4-H and the Future Farmers of America.
Labor Day Weekend Artfest
Downtown Castle Rock will be abuz Labor Day weekend when it hosts the 32nd annual Colorado Artfest. The juried fine arts show attracts artists from across the country. The free event is sponsored by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce.
Other summer events include Fitness Fridays, the weekly Yoga in the Park series and the Festival Park Farmers Market.
In addition to community events, other local cultural organizations include:
- Castle Rock Museum and Historical Society
- Front Range Theater Company
- Theater of Dreams
- The Wildlife Experience
It’s a busy events schedule, and one we’re glad to see returning.
