Douglas County Named a Healthy Community
A recent ranking by U.S. News and World Report and the Aetna Foundation listed Douglas County, CO, as the second healthiest community in the nation. In the report announcing the findings, U.S. News stated that the ranking reflects the economic and social vitality of the county.
The ranking scored nearly 3,000 counties in 10 categories and 84 indicators that drive community health. The ranking system is based on a framework developed by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services advisory board and the assessments of more than a dozen health experts.
Los Alamos County in New Mexico ranked as the top healthiest county. Six Colorado counties were named in the ranking’s 10 ten selections.
Douglas County is home to Miller’s Landing, a new 65-acre commercial development in Castle Rock that combines the vitality of a well-designed town center supported by modern offices, a resort hotel and spa, conference and meeting space, exciting retail and entertainment options, ample open space and easy access to the area’s best outdoor recreation park.
Factors Driving Community Health
According to U.S News, “How well and how long you live are shaped by where you live. Local health outcomes are often driven by factors like a community’s economic performance, the strength of its education system, the availability and affordability of housing and myriad other elements that affect residents’ overall quality of life.”
The ranking is based on 10 categories that drive overall community health. The factors are:
- Population health
- Equity (income, education, health, social equality)
- Community Vitality
- Public safety
- Food and nutrition
Population health and equity are the most heavily weighted categories in the ranking.
This year’s rankings also factored the impact of COVID-19 on the overall health of the ranked communities. Factors included:
- COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths
- Number of ICU beds within 10 miles
- Prevalence of obesity and diabetes
- Percentage of adults in fair or poor physical health
- Amount of population over age 65
- Unemployment rate
Douglas County also ranked number 2 in the U.S. News/Aetna Foundation Urban, High-Performing Counties rankings.
The report announcing these findings stated, “In measures of health and wellness, it can be difficult to top urban communities with high-performing economies – they tend to boast more accessible health care, higher academic achievement and more walkable neighborhoods.”
